VOCs – Volatile Organic Compounds Testing

IF THERE WAS A WAY TO ENSURE YOU ARE BREATHING HEALTHY AIR IN YOUR HOME, WOULDN’T YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT?

Maintaining good indoor air quality is important for your health.  According to the EPA, indoor air quality poses a greater health hazard than outdoor air pollution, with pollutant levels averaging 2-5 times higher than outside air.   More than 80% of the homes measured for indoor air contaminants exceed recommended safe levels of airborne chemicals.

Products and materials present in our homes constantly emit chemicals, called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the air.  Exposure to VOCs can cause numerous health issues, from headaches and nausea to respiratory and digestive irritation to asthma exacerbation.

Babies, young children, pregnant women, older persons, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular disease can be more vulnerable to indoor air pollution.  If your family is made up of any of these groups of people, then an air quality assessment would be wise.

Indoor air pollution is one risk that you can avoid if you are informed.  A VOC test can give you peace-of-mind and put you on the path to a healthier home.

WHY TEST?

  • Newer, more energy-efficient homes do not “breathe” correctly.  Home Air Check could potentially discover HVAC (freon) issues so they can be corrected.
  • Carpet, vinyl and laminate flooring, cabinets, counter tops, and other building materials use adhesives that “off-gas” continuously for years.  Many are manufactured using hazardous chemicals, some that can cause cancer.
  • Many man made materials contain formaldehyde, which is a known human cancer-causing agent, including engineered wood products (particle board, plywood, MDF, flooring, etc.), personal care and cleaning products, glues, paints and coatings and air fresheners.  It is also a byproduct of fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, tobacco smoke and more.
  • MVOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds that molds produce and are an indication of active mold growth.

Hope Home Inspections wants to ensure that houses are in good working condition and safe for their customers.  That is why we have invested in the equipment to provide indoor air quality tests that will give you a total assessment of the air in your new home.
